Fear of Slowing Down

Let me describe a common scenario…

A woman/mother/man/father (could be you) rises to the sound of an alarm, steps out of bed and into a role that s/he plays well — always working diligently on the projects of the day (work, parenting, meals, cleaning, driving, etc.) — crossing all of the ‘t’s and dotting all of the ‘i’s — rushing around to make sure deadlines are met.

Sometimes meals get skipped; sometimes, fast food has to suffice. Transitions between events/meetings/tasks are tight and sometimes it doesn’t feel like there’s room to breathe, much less observe the subtleties within moments.

Sometimes s/he hears a “thank you” (although it might be rare). S/he’s become so accustomed to this way of life that (most days) there’s no longer even a thought about “self-care”, or doing something for your Self. The evenings require as much routine and squeezing in as the days do, and by the end of the night s/he’s left drained, often indulging in one or more forms of self-medicating — a drink (or two), a few Netflix episodes, the infamous late-night snacking, etc.

It’s not until the weekend that s/he sometimes wonders where the life s/he used to dream about went; s/he sees life flying by without actually living it, and wonders if this is just how it goes. Not quite what s/he imagined for her/his self.

Can you relate to this story?

BAD NEWS: If you’re like most Americans, this is a rough sketch of your daily life.
GOOD NEWS: It doesn’t have to be this way! (keep reading)

When we are living as described above, i.e. modern, over-scheduled lives, we are out of touch with our bodies, our emotions, and our dreams. This translates as living in a constant state of triggering and fear, which means we are going through our lives mostly in Fight/Flight/Freeze (Sympathetic Nervous System) mode, which causes degeneration and disease. When we are in SNS (sympathetic nervous system), blood is diverted away from the organs and into the limbs for quick response. The problem isn’t the SNS, but the fact that we are constantly “on guard” for the next thing that needs doing or email that needs checking.

In order to HEAL, digest, and restore our bodies/minds we need to be in Parasympathetic Nervous System. And as long as we are operating in SNS (i.e. stress response) for the majority of our minutes/hours/days/weeks, then our hormones (and lives) will be out of balance.

Recognizing this is one thing, but making a lifestyle change is quite another.

“Maybe we hear these pleas from our bodies, but we don’t know how to stop running, pushing, overreaching ourselves. We are afraid that if we stop, something terrible will happen.”

~ Dr. Claudia Welch

You might not think you live in “fear”, but I’m here to tell you that if you are choosing a life that is harming your health, inside and out, and limiting your potential, then you ARE. A little tough love here…

As unintentional as it may be, YOU ARE CHOOSING the path of INSANITY! 😱

GOOD NEWS: You CAN Get OUT of this Cycle!!!
BAD NEWS: There is no quick fix — no pill, no diet, no superfood, no surgery, no ONE thing that will “fix it” FOR you. The work is all on you.
MORE GOOD NEWS: This is EXACTLY my specialty and I’d LOVE to help you get UNstuck!

P.S. It’s not going to be EASY, but it’s going to be BEAUTIFUL and so so so FULFILLING!

Schedule a time to talk with me here.

Overcoming RESISTANCE

Ever wonder WHY you don’t DO what you know you NEED to DO in order to BE your BEST Self?

There’s a REAL answer here, and it’s NOT just YOU. We ALL do it. It’s called…

RESISTANCE

Resistance is a natural way that the ego kicks in to save itself. It’s not inherently bad — it’s just the way the brain works. Unfortunately, though, if we don’t KNOW this and NAME it, then…

RESISTANCE = SELF SABOTAGE.

There are sooooo many ways that WE GET IN THE WAY OF OUR OWN HAPPINESS!

The good news is that we can beat it. I have a few #lifehacks to share with you in this week’s VLOG, so take a seat + OPEN your MIND…

Why You NEED to LOVE Your SELF

Sacred Journey.pngHave you ever had the thought that Self-Care is Selfish? You’re not alone. But…if that’s you — if you really believe that self-care is selfish, I’m here to burst your bubble.

For many people, the words “Self”, “Self Love” and “Self Care” have connotations with being “selfish” and are therefore thought of as “bad”, but our culture has it dead wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Through the ancient traditions of Yoga & Ayurveda, we learn a deeper understanding of the self.

The (small ‘s’) self is our personality, ego, mind, body, etc., but the big ‘S’ Self is the true self, higher self, more akin to one’s Soul.

During your everyday life, do you make time to do things that nourish your Self?

In the busyness of your schedule, I wouldn’t be surprised if your answer is no. In fact, I would bet most people don’t even acknowledge, or think about, their true self most days. Sadly, it’s not without a price.

We all know what happens when we don’t feed our (small ‘s’) selves. We starve, we are diminished, and eventually, die.

What happens when we don’t feed our Soul?

It withers. We lose touch with our dreams, our purpose, our confidence, our intuition. We forget our true Self, our one true “home”.

And when that happens, we start running on auto-pilot, we make choices that are out of integrity with our intentions, we have habits that don’t support real Health, we find fault in ourselves and others, frustration in things that shouldn’t really bother us…in short, life loses its LIFE. We aren’t Awake, and we certainly aren’t Radiant. That’s a big price to pay!

Being weighed down with regret isn’t the life anyone knowingly chooses, but it happens. We all want to feel AWESOME, but once you’ve been living a lackluster life for a while, it’s easy to forget that anything better is possible for you.

Let’s not go down that road! When you see the life it leads to, the benefit of Self Care becomes more evident. So…

The Best Way to Nourish Your Soul is to Cultivate a Loving Relationship with your Self.

There are several wonderful ways to deepen your relationship to Self. One is the take care of your (small ‘s’) self — your body and your mind. Another is to spend time alone with the Self through the practice of Meditation. It doesn’t need to be long or strict – there are many ways to begin a practice EASILY.

Here’s a Meditation Audio to get you started…

But if you’d REALLY like to FEED Your SOUL by cultivating a deeper relationship with your SELF, join my FREE Challenge NOW!

On Being HERE Now…

Recently I made a BIG move in my life — a choice to relocate my family. It was a HUGE undertaking that took a lot of COURAGE on my part (as well as a lot of support from family and friends to make it happen). In the process, I encountered many obstacles — some real, some imagined (LOL!), some planned for and some that completely blind sighted me.

So…I am HERE now.

I'm Here!

Or, I was the other day. (Ha ha ha!) But seriously…after the hub-bub of the initial move was over, I found myself feeling misplaced. My whole life had literally been transported and the life I knew — the friends, the places, the things — were gone, and suddenly replaced by new people, places, and things that were unfamiliar and new.

Where was MY place in this all? It was a surreal experience altogether and for more than a hot minute, I questioned my choice and my ability to confidently follow through with my vision for our new life.

What the HELL? I had put so much energy and effort into making this new phase of my life happen and now that it was HERE, part of me wanted to curl up and hide under the covers for a month.

Not the smoothest transition for me, but probably not the worst either. I knew that I wanted to really SHOW UP and make the most of this experience, but I had gotten into some bad habits during the move that were getting in the way of me showing up as my BEST self. Mainly, I was waaaaay out of rhythm.

Ayurveda (EYE-your-VAY-da), the sister science to Yoga, teaches us that when we are out of rhythm, we suffer, and boy is that the truth! During the weeks leading up to and during the move, I was eating at irregular times, staying up late, eating a later, heavier dinner, and not getting up early enough to really start my day right. These might sound like no big deal, and honestly 2 years ago, I might not have thought so either, but after experiencing the EASE that comes from being IN rhythm, being OUT of rhythm was seriously PAINFUL — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The price I paid for disregarding my body’s wisdom was REAL!

So what to do? First…I knew I had to get REAL here and get HONEST about what wasn’t working. Then, do the hard work of steering back in the right direction. That’s the hard part, though, right? When you find yourself in a position where you’ve already screwed up, sometimes it’s easier to just let it go than do the work of getting back on track. It’s called the “what-the-hell” effect. Ever heard of it?

“The what-the-hell effect is the feeling you get when you’ve already exceeded your preset limit and feel that since you’ve already failed, you might as well fail spectacularly…

…When you miss a goal or exceed a limit, be gentle on yourself. Don’t catastrophize. Armed with this knowledge and awareness, you’ll be able to make better, more informed choices as you move forward.”

It’s a REAL thing!!! You can read more about it in this short article by Eric Ravenscraft at LifeHacker.com HERE.

I’m sure you’ve had your own “what-the-hell” experiences. Sadly, it’s easy to keep going down that path and find yourself way, way off track. That’s how to devolve into a lesser version of yourself over time — NOT my recommendation.

If you don’t want to go down the path of regression/stagnation, you have to make a real effort to start right HERE where you currently are and pick the lowest hanging fruit that moves you in the direction you want to go.

5 Steps to Steer You Back On Track…

  1. Honestly recognize where you are and that it’s not where you want to be (but DON’T stay stuck there, move on to step 2).
  2. Know what you want to be different. What new habit would you like to have?
  3. Acknowledge the GAP between where you currently are and where you want to be and the fact that your daily habits have gotten you here.
  4. Know that you can CHANGE your habits.
  5. Ask yourself this question and be patient for the answer to arise: What New Thing Do You Need to Believe About Yourself In Order to Adopt Your New Habit?
  6. Write it down EVERYWHERE — put it on your computer desktop, your planner, your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator, your phone wallpaper, and anywhere else that you are guaranteed to look throughout your day.
  7. BELIEVE IT!
  • An example of a new belief might be: “I choose to listen to my body.” or “I have the power to design my life.” or “The way I eat nourishes my body.” If you’re having trouble coming up with a new belief to support your new habit, let me help you! Click the link at the end of this post to set up a time to talk to me!

What we believe about ourselves creates our daily habits, and our daily habits define us to the world, and then that’s reflected back to us by the people we interact with. So, literally…

Our thoughts about ourselves make the difference in who we are. They have the potential to either help us EVOLVE into more confident, loving, healthy people inside and out OR to keep us locked into all of the negative patterns that lead to our ruin.

It starts with just being HERE — being present with what IS with honesty and self-compassion.

When you sit with WHAT IS, what comes up for you? What’s not working that needs your honest, loving attention? What do you want to be different?

I want to know! Comment below or schedule a time to talk to me HERE.

As Always…

Let Go of that $#*t!

Hello Thrivers!

Do you consider yourself a “thriver”? I do, but…it may surprise you to know that I don’t always FEEL like one.

I work on this stuff constantly, but that doesn’t mean I have all of my sh*t together. It means that I know it’s possible and I actively engage in making it happen.

Sometimes I feel 100% on top of my game, living in gratitude and joy, feeling alive and confident in my whole self – mind/body/spirit, and I know the practices that get me there, so I keep working actively towards closing that gap. In a big way, this path is about getting in tune with my highest self/ intuition/ Source, but more than that it’s a shift in perspective (as in what I believe about myself and the universe).

Did you know that most of your beliefs about the world, yourself, and what’s possible are set by the age of 3?

That means that the majority of us have a LOT of RE-patterning to do in order to live from our own TRUTHS. That sounds crazy, but it’s true. Right now, we are all walking around with unconscious beliefs that we’ve held onto since early childhood and those beliefs are making decisions in our lives. We are making choices every day that aren’t coming from a place of Truth and Choice, but from old habits that don’t serve us.

In this video, I share with you come of the holistic practices that help me stay on the path when I feel like I’m losing my S#*t! What do you do when you feel like you’re losing it? Let me know in the comments if this was helpful.

It’s Time to Believe Something NEW About YOU!

What NEW thing do you need to start believing about yourself in order to be who you wat to be_1 (1)

Often in life, we cling to beliefs that (seemingly) help us just get through tough times. There’s one in particular that most of us use, and I want to talk about it because it causes us a lot of grief — “I don’t have TIME to…” Do you ever hear yourself saying that? Sometimes we might use it as an excuse to decline to do something we don’t want to do. I’m not talking about those instances. I’m talking about the times we use it to put off doing something that would actually make a difference in our lives — like self-care practices and connecting with the people in our lives. How often do you put off doing something that would nourish you off because you “don’t have time”?

I know it feels like you have a thousand plates spinning in the air and YOU (and ONLY you) have to be the one to keep them spinning or everything will fall apart. You’re the glue. You’re the Goddess. Right? I get it. The problem with this idea is that 1- it’s false and 2- it keeps you stuck in the rat race, with the belief that you’ll have time for all the things you want out of your life AFTER you just get through this next phase and everything ELSE is taken care of.

We tend to withhold the good feelings, the self-care, the things that bring us joy and nurturance, thinking those aren’t achievable in the present. What I want you to get is that it’s not an “either/or” scenario. It’s not your health/happiness/wholeness OR your family/career/community. The rest of your life won’t fall away when you start to give to your Self.  In fact, it’s the opposite! Your health, happiness, and wholeness will begin to slip away from you if you don’t make some changes in your habits and lifestyle.

Your current thinking/ mindset (beliefs) and your daily habits (actions based on those beliefs) have to CHANGE in order to make the Life You Want a reality. Who you are right now is a culmination of your own beliefs and your past actions, based on those beliefs. The life you see dangling before you — the one where you have time for taking care of you and connecting with the people you love — can NOT exist in your current life. What old beliefs are still hanging around and creating a mess of your life? What NEW things do you need to start believing about your Self/Life/Body/Finances in order to Start Living Your Dreams?

Leave a comment to let me know what’s holding you back and where you want to go!!! (I promise to respond to every comment I get!)

What’s Your Trajectory?

This is a serious question I have for you. Just to be clear, let me explain what I mean. Whatever your daily/weekly habits are — and by that I mean your habitual thoughts, the things you take in (not just food, but what you see, taste, touch, feel, etc.), what you do with your time, energy, and money, the people you surround yourself with, etc. — these things define you. They define who you are and how you are showing up in your life, but they also define where you are going. That’s what I mean by “trajectory.”

IMG_4150You see, whether you (or I) are conscious of it, or not, we tend to keep doing/saying/thinking the same things day after day. People don’t mean to choose to be stagnant, but without regular “big picture” thinking and without learning how to evolve the way we spend our time/energy/money, chances are we aren’t going anywhere we haven’t already been.

It can feel difficult to change. As I just mentioned, “know-how” is often a factor, but another lesser talked about cause of stagnation is an attachment to how things are. There can be a comfort in the pain, as in maybe it “seems” more comfortable to stay stuck where you are than to trade it for something you don’t even know if you can achieve. This is NOT the voice of Truth, or even the voice of Reason (because, no doubt, Reason would say, “You’ve been here and you know this isn’t going anywhere. You’d be better off trying something different, and fast!“). This is the voice of Self-Doubt, and in order to conquer it, I suggest IGNORING IT, because entertaining it gets you absolutely NOWHERE FAST and the more you listen, the more it talks! Seriously! At each new stage of our growth, there is resistance. This will not change.

Growth may not always be “comfortable”, but everything that you crave so deeply (and is your birthright!) — Wholeness, Ease, Vitality, Freedom, Pleasure, Connection, Time for Yourself, Vibrant Health, and Joy — is on the other side of that resistance. The other side of fear.

I was in South Dakota for a Yoga Health Coaching retreat a couple weeks ago. We talked about Evolution a LOT! My teacher talked about how there are three basic trajectories for people — one that is narrowing, one that is stagnant, and one that is ever-expanding. Let me explain…

  1. Many people get more and more narrow in their trajectory throughout their lives — not intentionally, but it happens.  How many people do you know that are walking around as a lesser version of themselves than when you first knew them? Most of our planet, I’m sure! That’s kind of the common knowledge that’s put out, right? Over time, you get older, lamer, less fun, your health dwindles, and your heading towards the grave. Am I right (I mean about the message we receive)? It’s not TRUE at all, but that’s what most people expect (sadly), and that belief/expectation becomes their self-fulfilling prophecy.
  2. In the stagnant trajectory, we stay kind of dumb to the intelligence of our physiology and our potential. There’s just no real progression in our lives. We experience dis-EASE as a consequence for our habits that don’t serve us, but we make no changes.
  3. And then we have my personal favorite — the Expanding Spiral! When we are on this trajectory, we continue to learn from our mistakes, tap into the wisdom of our physiology, LEAN INTO our GROWING EDGES and actually LIVE OUR EVER-GROWING POTENTIAL!

If we don’t say YES to wanting more and invest in new ways of growing, then we will keep doing the same thing we’ve always done.

Are you Upper-Limiting Yourself?

Have you ever heard the term “Upper Limiting”? In his book, The Big Leap, Gay Hendricks talks about how we self-sabotage by “upper-limiting” ourselves. He defines it like this:

“Each of us has an inner thermostat setting that determines how much love, success, and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy. When we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will often do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back into the old, familiar zone where we feel secure.”

Some of the ways we do this are worrying unnecessarily, playing the criticism and blame game, deflecting positivity and compliments, squabbling, and getting sick or injured. The premise is basically that we stop things from getting really great in our lives because, unconsciously, we don’t believe we deserve it. No one does it on purpose, so don’t beat yourself up. In my case with the newsletter, it was perfectionism (which might be a combination of criticism and worry).Getting It Done

Now I’ve learned that a balance needs to be struck between “getting it done” and “getting it right”, and in this case, I’ve been leaning all into the “getting it right” category, and therefore NOT getting it done at all.

Does this resonate with you? I can see how I’ve done this in so many ways throughout my life, but now that I recognize it so clearly, I’m changing how I do things. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. Starting with this post (which will also serve as a newsletter to those on my Email List)!

Owning up to behaviors/habits that don’t serve us is the first step in changing them. Now I’m wise to how seeking to get it right sabotages me from getting it done, so when I catch myself procrastinating on something because I want it to be “just so”, I will recalibrate and shift my trajectory towards Getting It Done.

In which ways do you Upper Limit yourself? I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to start the conversation!
