The Wisdom of Your Body + Soul

How connected are you to your Intuition?…Your Soul?…The Wisdom of your Body?

Over the past two decades of practice in the wellness industry, I’ve witnessed that many people have very little awareness of the intelligence of their bodies, their deepest Self (the Soul), or their own inner compass.

As a modern-day HUMAN, it’s actually quite a feat to stay connected to what matters in our over-scheduled, over-technological lives, especially when we didn’t grow up with the tools that could help us. And they aren’t teaching this stuff in school (YET)!

Did you know that your body communicates with you?

According to Ayurveda (Yoga’s sister science, and the world’s oldest documented holistic healing system), our bodies are innately intelligent. And according to modern science on fascia (the connective tissue that holds your body together), our bodies are communicating with us constantly. But in order to hear what’s being shared, we have to slow down and LISTEN, and so often we suppress signals we get in order to keep working away at a task.

How often to you stop “doing” and pause to listen?

Try it now.

EMBODIMENT PRACTICE:

Take a pause, place your hand on your body (your heart or belly are easily accessible choices). Close, or still your eyes. Notice your breath…your heartbeat…your feelings. Now begin to notice what’s going on INSIDE your body…are there parts that feel heavy? light? strong? tight? soft? tingly? cold? warm? hot? What do YOU notice? Do you need a drink of water? A bathroom break? A meal? A sweater? Now let yourself look around slowly — in all directions, just noticing your surroundings (don’t forget to look behind you).

It may seem too simple to be significant, but this is basic Self Care 101 here. Being a good parent to yourself. Not prioritizing production over taking care of yourself. Not suppressing natural bodily urges and needs.

BODY

Being disconnected from the Body means that you are suppressing all of the signals. Pain, for instance, is a serious message that people often ignore thinking they can “work through the pain”, but this only makes the root of the problem get worse and lead to bigger problems.

SOUL

Being disconnected from the Soul can feel like a disenchantment with life and purpose. It can suck all of the joy out of your days and leave you wondering what you’re doing with your life. It can cause you to look for unhealthy behaviors with which to fill the void of what’s truly missing. It can make you feel like there’s no meaning in your life, which can lead to apathy, disappointment, resentment, and depression.

INTUITION

Being disconnected from Intuition is like flying an airplane in a blinding storm without using the navigation system. Your intuition is meant to guide you. It is your built-in GPS! Without it, you will end up anxiously going through life unsure of what/where/how you should go next. You’ll question every choice you make and end up making major decisions based on cues you get from by “pop” culture, social media, and other people’s opinions. None of which are uniquely crafted to work for YOU!

You can rediscover your connection to your Soul, to the wisdom of your Body, and start living from your own Intuition!

🌿 5 Essential Practices for Thriving in Difficult Times

How are you? I know that’s a loaded question. There’s so much going on right now, so many possible answers to that question, right?

It would be perfectly reasonable to be experiencing any level of fear, numbness, anxiety, overwhelm, panic, anger, worry, frustration, sadness, love, or just about anything else.

We all deal with trauma, stress, or difficult situations in our own way. It’s really important that you allow whatever is coming up for you to be felt and digested, in order to be released.

I’ve noticed that often when something BIG happens — like COVID-19, 911, etc. I tend to go numb first. I don’t “feel” stressed or worried, but on a deep level, I am in shock. I’ve been functioning as normal, but I’ve been really hiding away, experiencing a whole range of thoughts and emotions,  and doing my best to take every day as it comes. How about you?

One thing that can help us get through this is having a gratitude practice. It can be so easy to obsess over all of the things that are scary and inconvenient, but if you’re lucky enough to be reading this, chances are you have many, many things that you can be grateful for right now.

I feel very, very grateful that I have support from my family right now, and that I know exactly how to take care of myself inside and out.

I want to share with you some of the ways that I stay healthy and sane during difficult times, so I’ve decided to step into the Light to do what I can do to help bring more Love into the world.

In this workshop, I share with you some of the things I’m doing to stay sane and healthy inside + out.  If you implement the tools that I’m teaching, you’ll have a powerful toolkit for keeping your sh*t together during these times, and beyond!

Learn 5 KEY daily practices that will help you keep your sh*t together
so that you can thrive – not just survive!

During these times of greater stress and fear,
our senses are overwhelmed,
our schedules are out the window,
and our minds are on hyper-drive,
which can set us up for physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual illness.

Learn how to protect yourself and LOVE yourself
for optimal health and healing!

I honor the financial difficulties that many of us are experiencing during this time by offering this workshop for FREE. However, if you feel called to make a donation, you can use the Paypal “friends and family” option to send money to: sacredspaceyoga@gmail.com

Fear of Slowing Down

Let me describe a common scenario…

A woman/mother/man/father (could be you) rises to the sound of an alarm, steps out of bed and into a role that s/he plays well — always working diligently on the projects of the day (work, parenting, meals, cleaning, driving, etc.) — crossing all of the ‘t’s and dotting all of the ‘i’s — rushing around to make sure deadlines are met.

Sometimes meals get skipped; sometimes, fast food has to suffice. Transitions between events/meetings/tasks are tight and sometimes it doesn’t feel like there’s room to breathe, much less observe the subtleties within moments.

Sometimes s/he hears a “thank you” (although it might be rare). S/he’s become so accustomed to this way of life that (most days) there’s no longer even a thought about “self-care”, or doing something for your Self. The evenings require as much routine and squeezing in as the days do, and by the end of the night s/he’s left drained, often indulging in one or more forms of self-medicating — a drink (or two), a few Netflix episodes, the infamous late-night snacking, etc.

It’s not until the weekend that s/he sometimes wonders where the life s/he used to dream about went; s/he sees life flying by without actually living it, and wonders if this is just how it goes. Not quite what s/he imagined for her/his self.

Can you relate to this story?

BAD NEWS: If you’re like most Americans, this is a rough sketch of your daily life.
GOOD NEWS: It doesn’t have to be this way! (keep reading)

When we are living as described above, i.e. modern, over-scheduled lives, we are out of touch with our bodies, our emotions, and our dreams. This translates as living in a constant state of triggering and fear, which means we are going through our lives mostly in Fight/Flight/Freeze (Sympathetic Nervous System) mode, which causes degeneration and disease. When we are in SNS (sympathetic nervous system), blood is diverted away from the organs and into the limbs for quick response. The problem isn’t the SNS, but the fact that we are constantly “on guard” for the next thing that needs doing or email that needs checking.

In order to HEAL, digest, and restore our bodies/minds we need to be in Parasympathetic Nervous System. And as long as we are operating in SNS (i.e. stress response) for the majority of our minutes/hours/days/weeks, then our hormones (and lives) will be out of balance.

Recognizing this is one thing, but making a lifestyle change is quite another.

“Maybe we hear these pleas from our bodies, but we don’t know how to stop running, pushing, overreaching ourselves. We are afraid that if we stop, something terrible will happen.”

~ Dr. Claudia Welch

You might not think you live in “fear”, but I’m here to tell you that if you are choosing a life that is harming your health, inside and out, and limiting your potential, then you ARE. A little tough love here…

As unintentional as it may be, YOU ARE CHOOSING the path of INSANITY! 😱

GOOD NEWS: You CAN Get OUT of this Cycle!!!
BAD NEWS: There is no quick fix — no pill, no diet, no superfood, no surgery, no ONE thing that will “fix it” FOR you. The work is all on you.
MORE GOOD NEWS: This is EXACTLY my specialty and I’d LOVE to help you get UNstuck!

P.S. It’s not going to be EASY, but it’s going to be BEAUTIFUL and so so so FULFILLING!

Schedule a time to talk with me here.

xoxo

Why You NEED to LOVE Your SELF

Sacred Journey.pngHave you ever had the thought that Self-Care is Selfish? You’re not alone. But…if that’s you — if you really believe that self-care is selfish, I’m here to burst your bubble.

For many people, the words “Self”, “Self Love” and “Self Care” have connotations with being “selfish” and are therefore thought of as “bad”, but our culture has it dead wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Through the ancient traditions of Yoga & Ayurveda, we learn a deeper understanding of the self.

The (small ‘s’) self is our personality, ego, mind, body, etc., but the big ‘S’ Self is the true self, higher self, more akin to one’s Soul.

During your everyday life, do you make time to do things that nourish your Self?

In the busyness of your schedule, I wouldn’t be surprised if your answer is no. In fact, I would bet most people don’t even acknowledge, or think about, their true self most days. Sadly, it’s not without a price.

We all know what happens when we don’t feed our (small ‘s’) selves. We starve, we are diminished, and eventually, die.

What happens when we don’t feed our Soul?

It withers. We lose touch with our dreams, our purpose, our confidence, our intuition. We forget our true Self, our one true “home”.

And when that happens, we start running on auto-pilot, we make choices that are out of integrity with our intentions, we have habits that don’t support real Health, we find fault in ourselves and others, frustration in things that shouldn’t really bother us…in short, life loses its LIFE. We aren’t Awake, and we certainly aren’t Radiant. That’s a big price to pay!

Being weighed down with regret isn’t the life anyone knowingly chooses, but it happens. We all want to feel AWESOME, but once you’ve been living a lackluster life for a while, it’s easy to forget that anything better is possible for you.

Let’s not go down that road! When you see the life it leads to, the benefit of Self Care becomes more evident. So…

The Best Way to Nourish Your Soul is to Cultivate a Loving Relationship with your Self.

There are several wonderful ways to deepen your relationship to Self. One is the take care of your (small ‘s’) self — your body and your mind. Another is to spend time alone with the Self through the practice of Meditation. It doesn’t need to be long or strict – there are many ways to begin a practice EASILY.

Here’s a Meditation Audio to get you started…

But if you’d REALLY like to FEED Your SOUL by cultivating a deeper relationship with your SELF, join my FREE Challenge NOW!

5 Tips to Stay Balanced During Vata Season

It’s Vata Season (otherwise known as Fall)!

Change is in the air! Not just the changing of the season, but Autumn is quite literally a season of change and quickness, which can throw a person off balance quickly.

Knowing your dosha and the dosha of the SEASON you’re in can be VERY useful in navigating through your day/month/season/year/life.

In Ayurveda (the science of life), your constitution is called your dosha. Dosha literally means “fault,” but I’ve also heard it translated as ‘that which tends to go out of balance.’ Ever heard the phrase “the only thing constant in life is change”?

There are 3 doshas — Vata (VAH-ta), Pitta (PIT-ah), and Kapha (KAH-pha). Each dosha is a combination of 2 of the 5 elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether) and therefore has dominant qualities about it. We all have all of these elements within us, but our personal dosha combination is determined mostly by your physical structure (body type) and doesn’t change. What DOES change is everything else — your environment, your emotions, the world, your relationships, etc. — ALL the time.

What’s super relevant to us right now is that Fall is VATA (Air + Ether) season.

Vata qualities are cold, light, dry, irregular, rough, moving, quick, and changeable. If we are not careful to balance these qualities during this season there can be a tendency toward overwhelm, anxiety, dry skin, constipation, insomnia, or depression.

What Can You Do to Stay Balanced during Vata Season?

Ayurveda teaches us how to balance the doshas by using opposite qualities. When Vata is out of balance, there are several things you can do to bring harmony back. First of all, I have to note that as a culture we have a chronic (long-term) vata-imbalance due to being over-scheduled and over-stimulated. That being said, regardless of your dosha, you can benefit from a Vata-pacifying lifestyle and diet.

Without further ado, here are my tips for bringing more balance during Autumn…
(If you want more, keep reading! At the end of this email, I’ll give you details on my upcoming FREE Online Workshop: EASE Into Fall with Healthy Habits that HEAL.)

  1. S L O W   D O W N – schedule in extra time for everything and don’t rush
  2. Consume Warm Liquids throughout the day (warm water or herbal teas) to hydrate and stay warm
  3. Eat Soup and soupy foods – smoothies, porridges, stews, you name it!
  4. Don’t skip the fats! High-quality oils (GHEE, sesame, sunflower, grapeseed, and olive) are nourishing and grounding.
  5. Keep a steady daily/weekly routine. Vata is chaotic enough, so don’t add flame to the fire!

On Being HERE Now…

Recently I made a BIG move in my life — a choice to relocate my family. It was a HUGE undertaking that took a lot of COURAGE on my part (as well as a lot of support from family and friends to make it happen). In the process, I encountered many obstacles — some real, some imagined (LOL!), some planned for and some that completely blind sighted me.

So…I am HERE now.

I'm Here!

Or, I was the other day. (Ha ha ha!) But seriously…after the hub-bub of the initial move was over, I found myself feeling misplaced. My whole life had literally been transported and the life I knew — the friends, the places, the things — were gone, and suddenly replaced by new people, places, and things that were unfamiliar and new.

Where was MY place in this all? It was a surreal experience altogether and for more than a hot minute, I questioned my choice and my ability to confidently follow through with my vision for our new life.

What the HELL? I had put so much energy and effort into making this new phase of my life happen and now that it was HERE, part of me wanted to curl up and hide under the covers for a month.

Not the smoothest transition for me, but probably not the worst either. I knew that I wanted to really SHOW UP and make the most of this experience, but I had gotten into some bad habits during the move that were getting in the way of me showing up as my BEST self. Mainly, I was waaaaay out of rhythm.

Ayurveda (EYE-your-VAY-da), the sister science to Yoga, teaches us that when we are out of rhythm, we suffer, and boy is that the truth! During the weeks leading up to and during the move, I was eating at irregular times, staying up late, eating a later, heavier dinner, and not getting up early enough to really start my day right. These might sound like no big deal, and honestly 2 years ago, I might not have thought so either, but after experiencing the EASE that comes from being IN rhythm, being OUT of rhythm was seriously PAINFUL — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The price I paid for disregarding my body’s wisdom was REAL!

So what to do? First…I knew I had to get REAL here and get HONEST about what wasn’t working. Then, do the hard work of steering back in the right direction. That’s the hard part, though, right? When you find yourself in a position where you’ve already screwed up, sometimes it’s easier to just let it go than do the work of getting back on track. It’s called the “what-the-hell” effect. Ever heard of it?

“The what-the-hell effect is the feeling you get when you’ve already exceeded your preset limit and feel that since you’ve already failed, you might as well fail spectacularly…

…When you miss a goal or exceed a limit, be gentle on yourself. Don’t catastrophize. Armed with this knowledge and awareness, you’ll be able to make better, more informed choices as you move forward.”

It’s a REAL thing!!! You can read more about it in this short article by Eric Ravenscraft at LifeHacker.com HERE.

I’m sure you’ve had your own “what-the-hell” experiences. Sadly, it’s easy to keep going down that path and find yourself way, way off track. That’s how to devolve into a lesser version of yourself over time — NOT my recommendation.

If you don’t want to go down the path of regression/stagnation, you have to make a real effort to start right HERE where you currently are and pick the lowest hanging fruit that moves you in the direction you want to go.

5 Steps to Steer You Back On Track…

  1. Honestly recognize where you are and that it’s not where you want to be (but DON’T stay stuck there, move on to step 2).
  2. Know what you want to be different. What new habit would you like to have?
  3. Acknowledge the GAP between where you currently are and where you want to be and the fact that your daily habits have gotten you here.
  4. Know that you can CHANGE your habits.
  5. Ask yourself this question and be patient for the answer to arise: What New Thing Do You Need to Believe About Yourself In Order to Adopt Your New Habit?
  6. Write it down EVERYWHERE — put it on your computer desktop, your planner, your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator, your phone wallpaper, and anywhere else that you are guaranteed to look throughout your day.
  7. BELIEVE IT!
  • An example of a new belief might be: “I choose to listen to my body.” or “I have the power to design my life.” or “The way I eat nourishes my body.” If you’re having trouble coming up with a new belief to support your new habit, let me help you! Click the link at the end of this post to set up a time to talk to me!

What we believe about ourselves creates our daily habits, and our daily habits define us to the world, and then that’s reflected back to us by the people we interact with. So, literally…

Our thoughts about ourselves make the difference in who we are. They have the potential to either help us EVOLVE into more confident, loving, healthy people inside and out OR to keep us locked into all of the negative patterns that lead to our ruin.

It starts with just being HERE — being present with what IS with honesty and self-compassion.

When you sit with WHAT IS, what comes up for you? What’s not working that needs your honest, loving attention? What do you want to be different?

I want to know! Comment below or schedule a time to talk to me HERE.

As Always…

Let Go of that $#*t!

Hello Thrivers!

Do you consider yourself a “thriver”? I do, but…it may surprise you to know that I don’t always FEEL like one.

I work on this stuff constantly, but that doesn’t mean I have all of my sh*t together. It means that I know it’s possible and I actively engage in making it happen.

Sometimes I feel 100% on top of my game, living in gratitude and joy, feeling alive and confident in my whole self – mind/body/spirit, and I know the practices that get me there, so I keep working actively towards closing that gap. In a big way, this path is about getting in tune with my highest self/ intuition/ Source, but more than that it’s a shift in perspective (as in what I believe about myself and the universe).

Did you know that most of your beliefs about the world, yourself, and what’s possible are set by the age of 3?

That means that the majority of us have a LOT of RE-patterning to do in order to live from our own TRUTHS. That sounds crazy, but it’s true. Right now, we are all walking around with unconscious beliefs that we’ve held onto since early childhood and those beliefs are making decisions in our lives. We are making choices every day that aren’t coming from a place of Truth and Choice, but from old habits that don’t serve us.

In this video, I share with you come of the holistic practices that help me stay on the path when I feel like I’m losing my S#*t! What do you do when you feel like you’re losing it? Let me know in the comments if this was helpful.

Here’s what others are saying that have worked with me 1-on-1:

Untitled design (2)“Working with Jessica absolutely changed my life! I felt like I had hit a wall, and with Jessica’s guidance, I was able to see what patterns were holding me back. Jessica’s style of teaching is gentle and approachable, and she speaks from a place of experience and understanding, helping you make bite-size changes and celebrate them appropriately! The material in the course is extremely practical; I know that these habits will stay with me for the rest of my life.  Jessica has a wealth of knowledge in the healing arts, and she makes this information accessible to all of her students. I would recommend this course to anyone – from those beginning on a wellness path to those who have already been on one for some time.”
